The awful man speaks

BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell talks about the day Prince Charles called him “awful.”

Guess what? It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day, and I wrote this post usin’ this online English-to-Pirate translator from the original Talk Like a Pirate Day website.

But rather than doin’ all t’ talkin’ meself, I thought I’d see how Prince Charles sounds in pirate-speak, so here’s a quote from a recent speech o’ his, translated into pirate-talk:

“Ladies and gentlemen, with t’ crisis o’ climate change and t’ risin’ cost o’ food, never has it been so important t’ take immediate action t’ protect marine life and enaye t’ sustainable management o’ t’ many resources and benefits that our seas provide t’ us all.”

Aaar, royal matey, I couldn’t have said it better meself.

In Jamaica, some Rastafarians “have rebuked fellow defenders of the Rastafarian faith for allowing Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to play on the Nyabinghi drums.”

Here’s a video of the incident in question.

In the early ’80s, Elvis Costello made an amusing video for his song “Everyday I Write the Book” featuring Prince Charles and Princess Diana lookalikes. I seem to be the only person in the world who remembers this video, so I was pleased to find it online.

2008 update: I’ve removed the original link to the video because it no longer works, but I’m happy to say I was able to find the video on the excellent Yahoo! Music site, and here it is:

“Everyday I Write the Book” is from the 1983 Elvis Costello and the Attractions album Punch the Clock, which is a great favorite of mine. (Elvis Costello himself supposedly doesn’t like it much, but I can no longer find a link to back that up, so who knows, maybe he does.)
